Understanding SASSA Grants in South Africa
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides financial assistance to vulnerable South Africans through various social grants. These grants form a crucial safety net for millions of people, including the elderly, disabled, and families with children.
Types of SASSA Grants
Old Age Grant
Available to South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees aged 60 and older who meet the means test requirements. The grant amount increases slightly for those 75 and older.
Disability Grant
For people aged 18-59 who have a disability that prevents them from working. Requires medical assessment and certification. The disability can be temporary (6-12 months) or permanent.
Child Support Grant
The most widely accessed grant in South Africa, supporting over 13 million children. Available to primary caregivers of children under 18 who meet income requirements.
Foster Child Grant
Paid to foster parents who have been legally appointed by the court to care for a child. Higher than the Child Support Grant to cover additional care costs.
Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant
Introduced during COVID-19 and extended, this grant provides temporary relief to unemployed individuals aged 18-59 with no other income. Must be reapplied for monthly.
